Using Gis to Model Patterns of Urban-rural Land Use Change

The rural-urban interface begins where suburbs end and extends into rural areas. In the United States, significant changes in land use and population have occurred in the rural-urban interface. These areas, which are also referred to as exurban areas, accounted for over one-fourth of total population growth from 1960 to 1990. By 1990, approximately 60 million people (24% of the total population) were living in “exurbia” in the United States (Nelson, 1992). As of 2000, 60% of Ohio’s land area and 17% of Ohio’s population were estimated to be in exurban areas (Irwin and Reece, 2002).
